The last time I posted a Curly hair update was back in October 2024! I had planned to update you all sometime during the winter season, however, time just flew by! You may think that my hair routine changed a lot in 5-6 months but not too much has happened. Since my last curly hair check-in I’ve started a new styling technique and tried out a dry curly haircut. I’ll explain both in more detail down below.
You’ll notice that I haven’t introduced too many new hair products. I’m still using up some styling products that I’ve had and working my way through them before I buy anything new. I did start using a new hair oil and a new hair growth treatment that I’ll also discuss later on in this post. So, keep reading to find out more about my curly hair care!

My HAIR TYPE
I have curly/wavy hair, I’m a type 2B-2C. I have thin, medium porosity hair, and my hair frizzes easily. I’ve been on my natural curly hair journey since late 2020. I wear my hair naturally curly 99% of the time, the only heat-styling tool I use is a diffuser. I no longer follow the Curly Girl Method rules but I am mindful of what ingredients are in the hair products. I use this website to help me identify the ingredients.
CURRENT WASHING ROUTINE
I use an oil to dry brush any tangles before I wash my hair in the shower to reduce the amount of breakage or hair fall out when I’m washing my hair in the shower. I do a bond treatment once a month and then alternate between using a deep moisturizing or protein mask. I also use a hair scrub and bond treatment once every two weeks. Every week I’ll do one of the mentioned treatments. I do sometimes skip a week and not use any treatments at all if I think my hair doesn’t need it. Down below are all the products I’m currently using in my hair cleansing routine.
Oil: OGX Renewing Argan Oil of Morocco Dry Oil Mist
Bond Treatment: Curlsmith Bond Curl Rehab Salve
Hair Growth Shampoo: VEGAMOUR GRO Revitalizing Shampoo
Hair Growth Conditioner: HASK BIOTIN BOOST Thickening Conditioner
Hair Scrub: VEGAMOUR GRO Scalp Detoxifying Serum
Deep conditioner: HASK ARGAN OIL Repairing Deep Conditioner Treatment (once every 2 weeks)
Protein Hair Mask: Palmer’s Coconut Oil Deep Conditioning Protein Pack (once every 2 weeks)
HAIR STYLING ROUTINE
The styling that I’ve been following for several months (and loving) is the flip, coat, scrunch method. After washing my hair, I apply a bit of leave-in and brush to distribute the product evenly. Next, I flip my head upside down, coat my hair with a hold styler (like a gel or mousse), use my hands to scrunch the product in, and finish off by scrunching using a microfiber towel. I follow this technique and then let my hair air dry until 50-70% dry (the time varies depending on how busy I am) and then finish off with a diffuser and blow dry until completely dry. If I have any crunchy curls I use an oil to “break the cast” by scrunching in the oil to get soft curls.
Brush: Tangle Teezer The Ultimate Detangling Brush & Tangle Teezer Detangling Mini Hairbrush (I use this brush to style face-framing hair sections)
Microfiber towel: Microfiber Hair Drying Towel Hair Wrap
Leave-In Conditioner: Lottabody Love Me 5-in-1 Miracle Creme OR L’Oreal Paris Elvive Hyaluron + Plump Replumpng Serum Leave-In OR L’Oreal Elvive Dream Lengths Curls Non-Stop Dreamy Curls Leave-in Cream OR Marc Anthony Strictly Curls Curl Defining Lotion
Mousse: Lottabody Coconut & Shea Oils Wrap Me Foaming Mousse
Gel: Aussie Instant Freeze Sculpting Mousse OR Rhyme & Reason Wave Revival Gel Serum
Diffuser: Conair Hair Dryer (with diffuser attachment)
Oil: OGX Renewing Argan Oil of Morocco Dry Oil Mist
Dry Shampoo: Dove Advanced Dry Shampoo Invisible & Fresh Refresh
how i sleep with curly hair
I flip my hair over and try to make a loose bun (aka a pineapple) on the top of my head and secure it with a satin scrunchie. I also sleep on a satin pillowcase to prevent frizz.
how i refresh my curls
The following morning, I take out my hair from the scrunchie and let gravity do its thing before deciding whether or not I need to refresh my curls. I’m a pretty reckless sleeper so I toss and turn a lot. Sometimes I need a major refreshing due to my hair looking too fluffy and having wonky curls but sometimes I can get away without doing anything at all!
When I refresh, I will spray a bit of water in a water bottle throughout my locks and apply a bit of whatever styling product I used the day before.
NEW DEVELOPMENTS
Dry Curly Haircut
I think I’ve only cut my hair once or twice since I last did a curly hair check-in. I’ve been doing this curly dry haircut when I do trim my hair. It’s a lot easier than it looks and actually what helped me was watching other curly-haired people follow the same dry haircut tutorial. I’m actually due for a hair trim pretty soon so I’ll be attempting this haircut soon!
Flip. Coat. Scrunch!
As I mentioned above, I’ve been following the Flip. Coat. Scrunch. technique for months! It’s very easy and has cut my styling routine in half which I love because I don’t like spending too much time on my hair. I love my curly hair but it can be time-consuming. The only issue I’ve found with this routine is that the curls don’t hold up too well. I have to refresh almost every day and my curls end up looking more loose but I don’t mind it. However, if you know of any other curly hair routine that’s easy like this one let me know!
Started using Minoxidil
My mom brought me back a bottle of Minoxidil when she was in Mexico. Minoxidil is a popular treatment proven to show hair growth. This is a topical Minoxidil product, a spray. You are supposed to use it twice a day, the instructions say 8 sprays per session. She also brought me back some vitamins and said that taking the two would help me with my hair growth journey. It’s only been a few weeks since I started taking both products so I don’t have anything to report. But if I do, I’ll mention it in my next curly hair check-in.

Are you a curly girl? What hair products are you currently using?

I didn’t know there were a lot of steps to maintain curly hair! I should start dry brushing my hair before I get into the shower but I’m so lazy that I end up using the Tsubaki Zero Second Hair Mask to get rid of hair tangles. It probably isn’t a good idea to do that because hair is easier to break and stretch when it’s wet. Thanks for the hair tips, Michelle xx
Yeah, curly hair is very high maintenance! Dry brushing works best for me because I have thin hair and don’t want to lose any more hair. Plus, it reduces tangles which is a huge bonus for me. ♥
