I discovered Rhyme & Reason by looking at the comments of a YouTube video from a curly-haired YouTuber whom I follow. A lot of the comments were requesting the YouTuber to review products from the brand Rhyme & Reason. I had never heard of this brand before, so I did a quick search.
Rhyme & Reason mainly sells shampoos and conditioners with a few styling products in their line-up, however, I was intrigued to discover that bottles are 100% recyclable! In this day-and-age I think a lot of people are conscious of their impact on the climate, so to see a brand with 100% recycled packaging is nice to see, especially at a drugstore value.
Rhyme & Reason has two lines that are designed for curly and wavy hair. The Quench & Curl line consists of a shampoo, conditioner, and leave-in conditioner. Their Wave Revival line contains a shampoo, conditioner, and gel serum, which is what I’ll be reviewing in this post!
The term “gel serum” intrigued me as I envisioned a light moisturizing gel that would leave a glossy shine. The packaging looked cute as well with its cool pink label and nozzle applicator tip. You rarely see nozzles on products other than oils so I was curious to see how this applicator worked with this gel serum.
When researching this product, I didn’t see too many written reviews so I thought that would be a wonderful opportunity to try this product as I love testing out products that don’t have too many online reviews because it feels like a hidden gem waiting to be discovered! Is the Rhyme & Reason Wave Revival Gel Serum a new holy grail product or a dud? Keep reading to find out!

MY EXPERIENCE
The Rhyme & Reason Wave Revival Gel Serum has a lightweight gel texture, non-sticky and serum-like. It has a fresh fruity floral scent that I find refreshing but it doesn’t linger on the hair. The gel isn’t moisturizing but it does hydrate the strands. However, I found myself reaching for more and more gel because I felt this product just absorbed into my hair, my hair just drank this stuff up! With that said, my curls never felt weighed down or like it had too much product, it just sat in my hair but my hair never felt moisturized either. I recommend using a very moisturizing leave-in conditioner before applying this gel to your hair.
Compared to other hair gels that I’ve tried, the Rhyme & Reason Wave Revival Gel Serum didn’t live up to my expectations. Yes, it defined my curls and waves but they didn’t last longer than the first day. This isn’t a long-lasting hard gel but it makes a nice refresher curl product when paired with damp hair. I would apply a bit of this gel into my palm and mist some water and mix the two to create a watery gel that I would distruibute over my day 2-3 curls.
Even though this gel didn’t work well on its own. When I paired with a foam or mousse (like this hair mousse) I would get lovely curly hair results! Because the Rhyme & Reason Wave Revival Gel Serum doesn’t provide a heavy hold when paired with another lightweight product with minimal hold, it works! The gel serum does leave a bit of a cast when paired with another product but when used on its own, I didn’t experience a crunchy cast so keep that in mind if that bothers you.
I didn’t love the bottle and nozzle packaging because it made it difficult to get the gel out, especially when the bottle is almost finished. Don’t get me wrong, I loved that the packaging is 100% recycled but maybe they could consider a different packaging for this specific product. I want to see more companies using 100% recycled packaging, especially now.
Overall, I didn’t love this product and wouldn’t repurchase it again because I didn’t find that special and I don’t think it benefited my curls. If you’re someone with a looser wave or curl hair type and/or you have very moisturized hair, then I think this product would suit you better. However, if you have dry hair/high porosity hair or a coily hair type, then I would suggest you skip out on this product.
