Today, August 31st is the Pines twin’s birthday! If you’re not familiar with the Mabel and Dipper Pines then you probably didn’t watch the Disney animated series, Gravity Falls. I watched Gravity Falls a year or two after the series ended in 2015. In honor of their 22nd birthday, the Gravity Falls wiki said they were born in 1999 but if the show ended in 2016 and they were 13 when the series ended wouldn’t they be 18? Anyways, that isn’t the point.
In honor of the Pines sibling’s birthday, I’m sharing a crochet pattern for a coffee cozy of Mabel’s shooting star sweater. In the show she where’s a different sweater each day which she handknits! So if you like, you can use this same pattern to create any of her other sweater designs but I went with the original sweater she wears in the first episode. This sweater will keep your coffee cup warm for the season. I’ve made a few other coffee coziness in the past such as this Starbucks sweater cozy and this Animal Crossing blazer cozy. This sweater coffee cozy is slightly different because Mabel’s sweater has puffy sleeves and a thicker turtle neck so I made those alterations in this pattern.

The pattern is written in US terms
This pattern uses a magic circle. Magic circle instructions here.

Sweater Cozy
With hook and red yarn
Row 1: ch 17 sts. Total = 16 sts
Rows 2-19: ch 1, dc 16 sts. Total = 16 sts
Cut off and weave ends
Sew the first and last row together with a tapestry needle. This will form a tube that will make the coffee cozy sleeve.
Turtleneck
Fold-down the top part of the sleeve to create a collar. Sew to secure the collar. Be careful and try to hide the stitches under the collar, you can use sturdy glue (or hot glue) if you prefer to glue instead of sewing.
To create the bottom part of the sweater. Insert your hook to the bottom side, opposite side of the collar.
Row 1: slst, sc 28 sts. Total = 28 sts
Row 2: ch 1, dc 28 sts. Total = 28 sts
Cut off and weave ends
Sleeves (make 2)
With hook and red yarn
Round 1: magic circle, 7 sts. Total = 7 sts
Rounds 2-6: sc 7 sts. Total = 7 sts
Round 7: 2sc in next st, sc 7 sts. Total = 8 sts
Rounds 8-9: ch 1, sc 8 sts. Total = 8 sts
Round 10: 2sc in next st, sc 8 sts. Total = 9 sts
Rounds 11-12: ch 1, sc 9 sts. Total = 9 sts

Assembly
Sew the sweater sleeves under where the turtleneck ends. Weave all loose yarn ends. Next, with yellow felt cut out a star and cut out strips with the purple, green, and orange pieces of felt. Glue and press lightly to secure.
And that’s it! If you haven’t watched Gravity Falls, I would recommend it, it’s the perfect summer-to-autumn transition series. I got through the entire series in less than a week.
Have you watched Gravity Falls?
