Pocket Advent Calendar ♥ Crochet Pattern

November 27, 2024

If you’ve been following for a long time (if you have, bless you! haha) then you may remember that I used to participate in Blogmas and even started a series of blog posts called ’12 Days of DIY’, a series of posts where I would post 12 DIY projects that were Christmas or holiday-related, back when I enjoyed the holiday season but as I got older, I started to dislike Christmas and the holiday season and eventually I stopped this series and Blogmas. I’m amazed at my younger self for posting so much content back then! Most of my Blogmas content has been taken down by me because I didn’t think they were my best posts and I wanted to update some of the crochet patterns with better terminology, hence today’s post!

This crochet pattern was originally posted in December 2014 and it shows! My crochet skills have definitely improved in the past 10 years and I’m more mindful of the yarn I used for projects. I also updated the pattern to include a way to hang the advent calendar and some other minor changes.

For this project, I used serval different yarns which I wouldn’t recommend! I recommend using a sturdy thick worsted-weight yarn so the calendar doesn’t droop down and maybe even consider attaching the calendar to a piece of wood or cardboard to display on so the items in the pockets don’t weigh down the calendar. Add whatever you want inside the pockets like tea bags, miniature treats, or toys. Get creative!

I probably should’ve posted this updated crochet pattern earlier this month so you had enough time to make this pattern for the holiday season. However, you can crochet one pocket each day in December this year and start using this advent calendar next year!

NOTES
The pattern is written in US terms
This pattern uses a magic circle. Magic circle instructions here.
If you have any problems with this pattern feel free to contact me so that I can make corrections to the pattern.

POCKETS (make 25)
With H hook and yarn
Row 1: ch 13 sts, sc 12 sts. Total = 12 sts
Row 2-29: ch 1, sc 12 sts. Total = 12 sts
Fold your piece in half and insert a stitch marker (or a piece of yarn) to indicate that this is where you will sew the sides of the pocket
Row 30: ch 1, sc 12 sts. Total 12 sts
Row 31: ch 1, dec 1 st, sc 8 sts, dec last st. Total = 10 sts
Row 32: ch 1, sc 10 sts. Total 10 sts
Row 33: ch 1, dec 1 st, sc 6 sts, dec last st. Total = 8 sts
Row 34: ch 1, sc 8 sts. Total 8 sts
Row 35: ch 1, dec 1 st, sc 4 sts, dec last st. Total = 6 sts
Row 36: ch 1, dec 1 st, sc 2 sts, dec last st. Total = 4 sts
Row 37: ch 1, dec 2 sts. Total = 2 sts
Row 38: ch 1, dec 1 st. Total = 1 st
Cut off yarn, leaving a long tail (enough yarn to ch a loop)

HANGING STRAP
With H hook and yarn
Attach to the edge of the top row with a slip stitch. Dc 60-70 sts. The number of stitches will differ depending on the stitches you cast on, I was able to cast on 60 sts but you could cast on more or less depending on your gauge.

Row 1: ch 2, dc 60 sts. Total = 60 sts
Row 2: ch 2, dc 1 st, dec 1 st, sc middle, dc 1 st, dec 1 st. Total = 58 sts
Row 3: ch 2, dc 1 st, dec 1 st, sc middle, dc 1 st, dec 1 st.. Total = 56 sts
Row 4: ch 2, [dc 1 st, dec 1 st](x2) sc middle [dc 1 st, dec 1 st](x2). Total = 52 sts
Row 5: ch 2, [dc 2 st, dec 1 st](repeat until the end of the row). Total = 39 sts
Rows 6-7: ch 2, dc 39 sts. Total = 39 sts
Row 8: ch 2, [dc 2 st, dec 1 st](repeat until the end of the row). Total = 30 sts
Row 9: ch 2, dc 30 sts. Total = 30 sts
Row 10: slst 15 sts, ch 30 sts slst in the same st, slst 15 sts. Total = 30 sts
Cut off yarn and weave yarn ends

ASSEMBLY
Time for the annoying part, sewing! Sew 5 pockets cozies, horizontally and vertically, 5×5. After you have sewn all of the cozies together, sew a border around the calendar. Attach the strap to the sides and center of the calendar. Tuck in 25 treats in each pocket and your countdown to Christmas has begun!

TIP: If you don’t have numbered buttons, you can use wooden buttons and write the numbers with a sharpie, like I did.

Hi, I want to try my hand at making these cozies for the advent calendar, but the pictures don’t show up. Do I need them? Thanks

Hi! I took down the photos because I wasn’t happy with them and planning on retaking them later. The pattern is still written so you don’t need to see the pictures to make the advent calendar. ♥

This is the cutest Advent Calendar I’ve ever seen, Michelle!!! I’m not familiar with crochet language. It looks so complicated. But I appreciate all the details that went into the post ♥ ♥ ♥ I’ve never done Blogmas for my blog ever. And I still haven’t lol.

omg this is so cute, and came out so good. I’m going to start my knitting journey in 2025, and thought of you! Send me luck (because I’m not sure that I’m going to be naturally good at it). I know crocheting and knitting are not similar at all, but if you have any tips, I’m all ears! xx

Awwwwww! Thank you! Good luck with your knitting this year! I only know the basics of knitting and would want to improve my skills as I prefer knitted textures. I recommend you use big needles, to begin with as bigger sizes tend to be easier to work with. Also, don’t be afraid to unravel your project and start again until you feel comfortable with the stitch tension. ♥
