BT21 Mang Plush ♥ Crochet Pattern

June 28, 2018

Can you believe we’re almost finished with all the BT21 patterns? Time flies by so quickly! I still remember the first BT21 pattern I crocheted. Anyways, today I’m making Mang who was created by J-Hope. I love how original this character is and the color palette they ended up using for Mang!

“While dancing, Mang is cooler than ever. Always wear masks.”

I’ve been looking forward to crocheting Mang because he’s the most unique character out of all of BT21 characters and I knew he would be a challenge to create, and I love a good challenge! The most challenging part when making Mang was his unusual head but I wanted to make sure I got this as close as possible to the original design because it’s the main point. Beside Mang’s horse-shape mask head, Mang also had other important features that I had to incorporate such as his heart nose and that mane/tail thing. He was tricky to make but I’m very proud of how he came out.

***PLEASE DO NOT SELL ANY OF THE FINISHED PROJECTS. THIS PATTERN IS TO BE USED FOR PERSONAL USE ONLY.***

Pattern Notes
The pattern is written in US terms
This pattern uses a magic circle. Magic circle instructions here.
If you have any problems with this pattern feel free to contact me so that I can make corrections to the pattern.

Head
With H hook and LB yarn
Round 1: magic circle, sc 6 sts. Total = 6 sts
Round 2: 2sc in each st all around. Total = 12 sts
Round 3: 2sc in each st all around. Total = 24 sts
Round 4: [sc 6 sts, 2sc in each of the next 3 sts](x2). Total = 30 sts
Rounds 5-13: sc 30 sts. Total = 30 sts
Round 14: [dec 1, sc 1 st](x6), sc 12 sts. Total = 24 sts
*start stuffing*
Round 15: [dec 1, sc 1 st](x4), sc 12 sts. Total = 20 sts
Round 16: [dec 1, sc 1 st](x4), sc 8 sts. Total = 16 sts
Round 17: sc 16 sts. Total = 16 sts
Cut off and leave long tail for sewing

Nose
With H hook and HP yarn
Round 1: magic circle, sc 6 sts. Total = 6 sts
Round 2: 2sc in each all around. Total = 12 sts
cc to LB yarn [2 sc in 1 st]
cc to HP yarn
Round 3: sc 2 sts, [2sc in 1 st, sc 2 sts](x3). Total = 16 sts
cc to LB yarn
Rounds 4-5: sc 16 sts. Total = 16 sts
Cut off and leave long tail for sewing

Neck
With H hook and LB yarn
Round 1: magic circle, sc 24 sts. Total = 24 sts
Rounds 2-6: sc 24 sts. Total = 24 sts
Cut off and leave long tail for sewing

With a scrap piece of black yarn add nostrils to Mang’s nose. Then sew the nose to the head, stuff as you go. Next, fold the neck part down and sew around, it should look like a thin donut. Turn the next piece upside down (round part should be facing down), pin with sewing pins and sew down to the head.

Ears (make 2)
With H hook and LB yarn
Round 1: magic circle, sc 8 sts. Total = 8 sts
Rounds 2-4: sc 8 sts. Total = 8 sts
Cut off and leave long tail for sewing

Mane
With H hook and B yarn
Row 1: ch 7, sc 6 sts. Total = 6 sts
Rows 2-16 : ch 1, sc 6 sts. Total = 6 sts
Cut off and leave long tail for sewing

Tail
With G hook and B yarn
Round 1: magic circle, sc 6 sts. Total = 6 sts
Rounds 2-6: sc 6 sts. Total = 6 sts
Round 7: [dec 1, sc 1 st](x2). Total = 4 sts
Rounds 8-15: sc 4 sts. Total = 4 sts
Cut off and leave long tail for sewing

Fold the mane piece in half lengthwise and sew the side closed. While you’re sewing create these hair bumps by inserting your needle all the way up (round part of your fold) and sew a few stitches all the way down so that the sts weigh down and create a lump, repeat until you have 5 bumps.

Attach by sewing the tail to the end of the mane piece. Next, pin down the mane part to the side of Mang’s head and sew on each side so that the mane is secure. Don’t sew the tail to the body! Pin the ears next to mane where the second bump is and attach the ears to the head.

Legs (make 2)
With hook and LP yarn
Round 1: magic circle, sc 8 sts. Total = 8 sts
Round 2-5: sc 8 sts. Total = 8 sts
Cut off and leave long tail for sewing (only for 1st leg)
For the second leg, DO NOT CUT OFF. Attach the second leg by ch 2 sts, slst to a stitch on the first leg. Now you will be creating the body.

Body
With hook and LP yarn
Round 1: ch 9 sts, [sc 8 sts, flo sc 2 sts](x2). Total = 20 sts
Rounds 2-9: sc 20 sts. Total = 20 sts
Round 10: [dec 1, sc 1 st](x10). Total = 10 sts
*start stuffing*
Round 11: dec 5 sts. Total = 5 sts
Cut off and leave long tail for sewing

Arms (make 2)
With hook and LP yarn
Round 1: magic circle, sc 6 sts. Total = 6 sts
Rounds 2-7: sc 6 sts. Total = 6 sts
Cut off and leave long tail for sewing

Assembly
I highly recommend using sewing pins to keep everything intact and look at pictures of Mang for reference. Start by sewing the arms to Mang’s body. Next, sew the head to the body. What I did was sew the bottom part of the head (not the neck) and sew it to the top of the body. You can choose to either sew or hot glue the end of the mask (neck) to the body but I just left it as is because it looks more like a mask that way.

With black and white felt cut out various different circle sizes and glue together until they look like Mang’s eyes. Glue the eyes to Mang’s head and press lightly to secure.

Thank you! This pattern may be too complex for beginners but check out my other BT21 patterns if you want to crochet a plushie. I think the Shooky pattern would be great for a beginner. ♥

You are suppose to sc 6 sts and than 2sc in the next 3 sts and then repeat that entire row again. You should get 30 sts total. Hope this helps! ♥
